“I’m the first person who people talk to when they call the hospital,” says Cheryl Drumm, Switchboard/Registrar at Stony Brook Eastern Long Island Hospital. “I help them figure out what they are looking for. From appointments and results, connecting them to patients or staff in one of our departments, we help people get where they need to go quickly.” Cheryl has been here at the hospital for 13 years and started in housekeeping. She became a relief clerk then took over the switchboard and joked, “I do a little bit of everything now.” Patient Access Week is March 31 – April 6 and Cheryl explains that “in Patient Access we indeed wear many hats to help patients and it all starts with registration and admissions. Patient Access is everything that happens before a patient sees a doctor, goes to the ER, or gets tests or lab work. We gather and update patient information, contacts, insurance and pharmacy information, and labs. We make sure everything is updated and current with a patient before they are seen by a doctor, nurse, or lab tech.” “I like the people I work with,” says Cheryl. “Our jobs overlap, and we work together to help patients. Here at SBELIH, everyone is so respectful. I enjoy my job and the various duties I have. As a switchboard operator, I’m like Alexa and Google here with everyone calling for information about all sorts of things. It’s very fast-paced.
