An NIA-funded study of Medicare data found that around 9% of beneficiaries — around 5.3 million people — may have Alzheimer's or a related dementia. Researchers used diagnostic and prescription-drug codes to count dementia cases among over 60 million Medicare beneficiaries from 2017 to 2019. This approach to capturing dementia data could lead to the development of a new national surveillance method if validated. https://lnkd.in/e26_M3wP #NIAFunded #NIHAging #Alzheimers #Medicare #Dementia

Previous estimates of lifetime dementia risk in the United States are 19-23% for women and 11-14% for men. To gather updated projections, NIH-funded researchers analyzed data on more than 15,000 people from the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study. The researchers estimated a lifetime risk of dementia of 42% after age 55, more than double previous estimates. https://lnkd.in/eUdZBi9P #NIAFunded #NIHAging #DementiaRisk

What are autoimmune diseases? Your immune system is the network of cells and tissues in your body that work together to defend you from viruses, bacteria, and infection. It tries to identify and destroy the invaders that might hurt you. In autoimmune diseases, proteins known as autoantibodies target the body’s own healthy tissues by mistake, signaling the body to attack them. There are numerous types, including many that impact the joints, muscles, and skin. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/e3qka6wJ #AutoimmuneAwareness

There are a variety of policies, considerations, and guidance available to support researchers to safely and efficiently manage and share data from their studies. NIA developed the NIA Data Sharing Resource Toolkit for Research as a resource to support researchers. It includes details on the Final NIH Policy for Data Management Sharing and the NIH Genomic Data Sharing Policy. Researchers have developed a medication that shows promise in treating acute and chronic pain in animals. The drug targets the body’s cannabinoid receptor type 1 (CB1) and was effective in three different animal models for pain and does not appear to cause the harmful side effects that have frustrated other efforts to target CB1. These results enhance understanding of how to design safer and more effective drugs targeting cannabinoid receptors and are an important step towards developing novel, non-addictive treatments for pain.

Many scientific studies suggest restricting daily food intake to an eight-hour timeframe is an effective way to address obesity, but the optimal time of day remained in debate. In collaboration with the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), and the Universities of Granada and Navarra in Spain, NIA-funded researchers found that time-restricted eating provides beneficial effects, no matter what time of day individuals have their meals. Financial struggles, like missing credit card bills or mortgage payments, may be an early sign of dementia—often years before diagnosis, according to a recent NIA-funded study. In the year before diagnosis, people were 34% more likely to miss credit card payments and 17% more likely to miss mortgage payments.
